Investigation underway after a woman was struck by a train north of downtown Tuesday.
SAN ANTONIO — A woman was fatally struck by a train in San Antonio on Tuesday afternoon, forcing a halt to all rail movement on a key corridor north of the city’s downtown.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the 1200 block of North Flores Street. San Antonio police at the scene stated the woman, who has not been identified, was on the tracks at the time of the collision.
It was not immediately clear if the train involved was a passenger or freight train. The crew of the train was unharmed.
“The investigation is in its preliminary stages,” a San Antonio police spokesperson said during a press conference. “We are working to understand why the individual was on the tracks.”
This rail line is a critical shared-use corridor, utilized by both Union Pacific freight operations and Amtrak’s Texas Eagle passenger service. Any incident resulting in a track closure can cause significant, cascading delays for all rail operators in the region.
Rail traffic was stopped for several hours Tuesday as authorities conducted their investigation. Amtrak passengers on services routed through San Antonio are advised to check for any residual schedule delays.
