Amtrak Auto Train: Stops, Stations & Must-Knows (A Complete Rider Guide)

This article describes the “Auto Train” route of Amtrak, which carries passenger cars.

Amtrak’s “Auto Train” is an 855-mile daily train service between Lorton, Virginia and Sanford, Florida, serving passengers and their automobiles. It is the only motorail service in the United States, offering coach seats or private sleeping car rooms and enclosed freight cars called autoracks. The train can carry up to 340 vehicles and includes lounge and dining cars. Passengers who bring their own vehicles can avoid driving Interstate 95 in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The service has the highest revenue of any train in Amtrak’s Long Distance Service Line. It operates non-stop between its Virginia and Florida terminals, except for a brief stop in Florence, South Carolina for servicing and crew changes.

Amtrak Auto Train Stops & Stations

Amtrak Auto Train Stops & Stations

The Auto Train has only two stations:

  • Lorton, Virginia (near Washington D.C.)
  • Sanford, Florida (near Orlando)

Lorton, Virginia Station (near Washington D.C.)

The southern terminus is in Sanford, Florida, which is roughly a half-hour drive north of Orlando. The original facility was older and smaller than the Lorton Terminal. The Auto Train loads passengers on two tracks at Sanford since one track is not long enough to accommodate all of the passenger railcars. Sanford’s operation is distinctive in that a railroad crossing runs through the center of the rail yard.

This complicates various switching procedures and necessitates a three-person yard conductor team (conductor, assistant conductor, and utility conductor), whereas operations at Lorton require only a conductor and assistant conductor. Both yards use the same engineer. Auto Train’s main mechanical and maintenance facility is in Sanford, which also houses diesel and automobile shops to service the fleet. The city of Sanford offers a free shuttle service to the historic area every 20 minutes between noon and 2:00 pm on all days except Sundays and major holidays.

Sanford, Florida Station (near Orlando)

The Auto Train uses Amtrak’s bi-level Superliner equipment for western US trains, which cannot pass through Baltimore Penn Station or the North River Tunnels for New York Penn Station access. The train consists of two GE Genesis locomotives, a transition sleeper car, three sleeping cars, a sightseer lounge car, a full-service dining car, five sleepers, a cafe dining car, four coaches, and up to 33 autoracks. Sleeping cars have deluxe bedrooms, roomettes, family bedrooms, and accessible bedrooms. Coach cars have reclining seats on both levels. The Sightseer Lounge car has wrap-around windows and an informal café.
