Collision briefly halted traffic near tracks used by Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited and Capitol Limited routes.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Several avenues in Toledo were temporarily closed Thursday after a passenger vehicle crashed into a train, according to local authorities. The driver of the car has been cited, and all roads have since reopened.
The collision occurred early Thursday morning. Toledo Police reported that the driver failed to yield at a marked railroad crossing and struck a Norfolk Southern freight train.
No serious injuries were reported, but the incident forced the closure of several key avenues for nearly two hours while crews cleared the scene.
Why This Matters for Travelers
This incident occurred on a vital rail corridor shared by freight and passenger trains. The tracks are used daily by Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited (Chicago-NewYork/Boston) and Capitol Limited (Chicago-Washington, D.C.) services.
Any obstruction on this line can cause significant delays for Amtrak passengers.
“While Amtrak trains were not directly involved, we closely monitor all incidents on shared tracks,” said a transportation official. “Passenger rail safety and punctuality depend on clear crossings.”
What’s Next
As of Thursday afternoon, Toledo Police confirmed all related road closures have been lifted.
Amtrak reported minor residual delays for morning services passing through the area but stated that services are now running on or close to schedule. Travelers are advised to check Amtrak.com for the real-time status of the Lake Shore Limited and Capitol Limited before heading to the station.
