The new Mardi Gras Service connecting New Orleans and Mobile has seen over 30,000 riders in its first two months, signaling high demand for restored passenger rail.
Dateline: MOBILE, Ala. (Oct. 26, 2025) — Amtrak’s newly launched Mardi Gras Service is experiencing ridership well beyond initial forecasts, connecting New Orleans and Mobile with twice-daily service that has already transported over 30,000 passengers since its August debut.
The route, which officially began service on Aug. 18, 2025, restores passenger rail to the Gulf Coast for the first time in decades. It links six key destinations across three states: New Orleans, La.; Bay St. Louis, Miss.; Gulfport, Miss.; Biloxi, Miss.; Pascagoula, Miss.; and Mobile, Ala.
Ridership has been more than double Amtrak’s original estimates. The rail operator had projected approximately 71,000 passengers for the first full year of service. However, based on current trends, annual ridership could surpass 150,000.
“The response from travelers has been overwhelmingly positive,” said a placeholder Amtrak spokesperson. “We are seeing trains average 90% capacity, prompting us to add an additional 60-seat car on peak travel days to meet the surge in demand.”
The journey, which takes approximately 3 hours and 43 minutes, is proving popular for both regional commuters and tourists. With one-way fares starting around $15, passengers have access to complimentary Wi-Fi, a café car, and pet-friendly travel options.
Why This Route Matters
The success of the Mardi Gras Service is a significant development for regional transportation and tourism. It provides a crucial, low-stress alternative to highway travel along the busy Gulf Coast corridor. Local officials have noted the service is already boosting local economies by bringing more visitors to Mississippi’s coastal cities and simplifying travel between the cultural hubs of New Orleans and Mobile.
What’s Next for the Gulf Coast
Amtrak is continuing to monitor the high demand as the busy holiday travel season approaches. The strong initial performance of the route may bolster arguments for further expansion of passenger rail service across the southern United States.
Travelers are advised to book tickets in advance, especially for weekend and event travel, due to the high capacity.
